When heavy rain hits, gardens can quickly become waterlogged, leaving puddles where grass and plants struggle to survive. A simple and sustainable solution is to create small garden channels – sometimes called swales or rain channels – that guide water away naturally. It doesn’t require major landscaping, just a bit of planning and an understanding of how water moves through your garden. Here’s a guide to help you create your own small channels and make your garden both more resilient and more beautiful.
Why Natural Drainage Matters
Across much of Australia, rainfall patterns are becoming more unpredictable – long dry spells followed by intense downpours are increasingly common. Many gardens aren’t designed to handle sudden heavy rain, and when the soil becomes saturated, water can’t soak in. It flows to the lowest points, often pooling near patios, paths, or house foundations.
Small channels help direct this excess water away from buildings and hard surfaces toward areas where it can soak into the ground, such as garden beds, lawns, or rain gardens. This reduces the risk of flooding, eases pressure on stormwater systems, and helps recharge the soil. At the same time, these channels can become attractive, natural features that support local biodiversity.
Planning: Watch How Water Moves
Before you start digging, take time to observe your garden during or after a rain event. Where does the water collect? Which way does it flow? Note the natural slopes and low points – they’ll guide you in deciding where to place your channels.
A good rule of thumb is to direct water away from your house and toward areas where it can safely soak in. Avoid sending runoff onto neighbouring properties or into the street, as this can cause erosion or drainage issues.
How to Create a Small Channel
Once you’ve mapped out the route, you can start shaping your channel. You don’t need special tools – a shovel, a wheelbarrow, and some patience will do the job.
- Mark the path using string, sand, or a garden hose to visualise the flow.
- Dig a shallow trench, usually 10–20 cm deep and 20–30 cm wide. Keep a gentle slope – about 1–2 cm per metre – so water flows smoothly without pooling.
- Shape the sides softly to make the channel look natural and easy to maintain.
- Line the base with coarse gravel or small stones to improve drainage and prevent erosion.
- Plant along the edges with native grasses, sedges, or moisture-tolerant plants such as lomandra, dianella, or native irises. These help stabilise the soil and create a lush, natural look.
For a decorative touch, you can add flat river stones or small boulders along the channel. This not only enhances the appearance but also slows the water flow, reducing erosion.
Combine with a Rain Garden or Soakaway
A channel can lead into a rain garden – a shallow, planted area designed to capture and absorb runoff. Rain gardens are ideal for Australian conditions, as they can handle both wet and dry periods. Alternatively, you can direct the channel into a soakaway pit filled with gravel or drainage cells, which allows water to slowly infiltrate the soil.
Both options help manage stormwater naturally and reduce the burden on local drainage systems.
Maintenance and Seasonal Care
Small channels are easy to maintain. Clear away leaves, soil, and debris that might block the flow, especially after storms or during autumn. Check that the slope still works and that plants aren’t overgrowing the channel.
During dry periods, the channel can simply blend into the garden. After heavy rain, it will come to life again, guiding water gently through your landscape.
